Tips for Success on CAASPP State Testing

April 24  -May 5

· Research is very clear on the importance of healthy eating and rest to increase performance on standardized testing.   Be sure that your child gets 8-10 hours of sleep each night and eats a healthy breakfast each day of testing.  Breakfast foods should be low in sugar and high in protein to enhance performance.

· Please make sure that your students are on time each day and stay for the entire day.

· Make sure that your students know who is picking them up each day.  We will not interrupt classes during testing to deliver messages.

· Avoid stressful situations prior to testing.

· Encourage your child to do his/her best.

· Think positive thoughts!

STRATEGIES FOR STUDENTS (Please discuss with your children)

· Be sure to read the entire question or problem before trying to answer. Be sure you understand the question, being careful to notice words like ‘not’ or ‘never’ or ‘all of the above’.

· Notice special headings, pictures, or map keys. These will give you answers or  clues to some questions.

· Understand that some sections of a test will take longer than others.

· It is important to persevere through the testing process and do your best on all sections.

· When completing the reading portion of the test, it is important to read the questions thoroughly and look back in the text for the answers.

· Make sure to work out all math problems and do not guess at the answer.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your support of Old River Elementary School and the investments you make in your children’s lives. We are so excited to introduce you to this semester’s only major fundraiser, the Apex Fun Run!  The Apex Fun Run will last for 2 weeks and kicked off with a Pep Rally today.

Please look for your child’s Pledge Kit that they will received.  We will have emails coming from your teachers.  Please feel free to visit www.apexfunrun.com to hear about this interactive program that helps schools all over the country raise money, while promoting leadership and fitness in the classes.  This year's character theme is Apex Legends, where students will follow Tikes, Seeds, Specs, Jazz, and Wheels through the pages of their legendary adventure to discover JJ Cortez’s hidden treasure. Along the way these five friends discover what it truly means to be a Legendary leader:

o      Learn

o      Engage

o      Give

o      Empower

o      Never Quit

o      Do

During the Apex Fun Run, students are challenged to get pledges for the laps they will run on Thursday, April 20 to help their school.  Students will run for 30 minutes and average 26-36 laps, with the maximum amount of laps being 36 (each lap is 1/16th of a mile).  Sponsors can pledge $1, $2, $5 or any other amount for each lap students run.  All participants will receive an access code that allows you to enter pledges online.  Funds raised this year will be going to the school to pay for an electronic marquee and playground equipment-improvements such as swings, buddy bench, and/or shade!

The Apex Fun Run is for every student regardless of financial giving.  All students will receive Apex bands, race-day lap counters, and team awards.  We invite all parents to come to the Apex Fun Run and share in this great event!  The ApexFun Run is April 20 at 10:30 a.m.:

You can help our school be successful in the following four ways:

●      Help connect your child to potential sponsors (family/friends) to acquire pledges.

●      Ask your child about the “Legend” character lessons, and download the “Apex Fun Run” App!

●      Come to the Apex Fun Run and don’t forget to invite others to attend our fun-filled community event on our field.

●      Help volunteer for the race!  We need a few parents to help cheer on students and mark laps.  If you would like to volunteer for your student’s race, please contact Devany Dee @ devdee81@yahoo.,com

Thank you again for your continued support—we are so excited to begin this journey with you!

SWIMMING

April 5, 2017

Dear Parents,

Starting Tuesday, April 11, the Knightsen swimming pool will be used during school hours for grades TK-5. We will take them over on a bus. Please remember that our dress code expressly states one piece swimsuits only. Excessively revealing swim suits are prohibited.

We will inform you if there are any changes to the assigned day for swimming.

All students are expected to participate in swimming instruction.  The program counts toward their P.E. grade.  Students who are unable to swim will be assigned an alternative P.E. program or assignment.  Students’ grades will be affected if they do not participate in swimming or the alternate P.E. program.

Students must bring:  SWIMSUIT, PLASTIC BAG, TOWEL, SWIM CAP OR TIE SHOULDER LENGTH HAIR

Students should place street clothes in the plastic bag they bring so all of their belongings are organized in the dressing area.  After swimming, students are to change into their street clothes.  Students should put their names on their plastic bags….no one is to bother anyone’s property.  Please return the permission slip no later than next week by the swim day of your student.  Students without a permission slip will not swim and their P.E. Grade will be reduced.

Reward

Mr. Witte will donate $150 to purchase one or more types of animals to help those in need around the world if the school can run a total of 3,500 miles by June 2.  We are currently at 2,300 miles.  If students, staff and parents want to chip in to make it possible to donate larger animals or more animals, they can turn in donations to the office.

Students will get to vote on which type of animal(s) they would like to buy and donate.  Each foot (every 5 miles) a student gets, earns them a vote. Someone who runs 20 miles get 4 votes that they can put anywhere on the ballot.

Come see the Night Sky at Knightsen Elementary!

Tuesday, March 7 @ 6:00-8:00 PM on the blacktop

We have a wonderful opportunity to have the Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society, MDAS, come to our school. The volunteers will share their time and telescopes to bring the Universe to our students. We will begin with a short introduction at 6:00 on the blacktop and then spend the rest of the time looking for different objects in the night sky.

Rain or Shine! We will have alternate indoor Astronomy activities if the weather does not cooperate.

Please join us for an evening of fun and exploration! Students must be with an adult at all times. We need to let MDAS know how many people will be here, so they can have enough telescopes set-up for us. Please return the notice to attend by Friday March 3!
